AUTHOR EVENT WITH JULIA ALVAREZ

Join legendary author Julia Alvarez in conversation with Vermont author Ann Davila Cardinal to celebrate Alvarez's new novel, "The Cemetery of Untold Stories" and delve into the power of stories, both told and untold. In her review, Bear Pond Book's Claire Benedict says "When author Alma Cruz tries to literally bury her untold stories, the stories come to life and speak to visitors, to each other, to anyone who will listen to remind of us the power and necessity of storytelling in our lives. This book is a gem of imagination and craft."

This event will be held in the second floor sanctuary of the Unitarian Church. The church's elevator is out of service since July's flood. Access will be by stairs only. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Derry Author Fest

Ann Dávila Cardinal is giving the keynote for the 2023 Derry Author’s Fest in New Hampshire, Saturday, April 8th.

Writing from the In Between: Navigating Identity as a Writer Between Worlds

So much of our identity as people bleeds through to our identity as writers. We’re told, “write what you know,” and we want to honor the own voices movement, but what if you don’t feel you belong to any particular group? Ann will examine her own experiences of identity and writing as someone of mixed ethnicity. She’ll explore how these issues appear in her work as well as examine a selection of other writers’ books, including Randy Ribay’s Patron Saint of Nothing, Ayanna Lloyd Banwo’s When We Were Birds, and Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime.

Derry Author Fest is a day of writing workshops, panels and networking for aspiring authors, dreamers and dabblers alike. We bring in reputable speakers to teach in areas of their expertise. As an attendee, you can stay all day, half day, or just drop in for a session. Book sales and signings are interspersed in between our workshops so you will have time to buy books, support local artists and get some face time with our teachers. Check out the schedule and our amazing speakers for more information.

The Derry Author Fest is a free event hosted by The Derry Public Library.
